One of the best English portrait artists, Joseph Highmore was a self-taught painter who came to the attention of Sir Godfrey Kneller because of his assiduous attendance at Kneller's Academy of Art in Great Queen Street. Encouraged by this encounter, Highmore devoted himself entirely to drawing and painting.
