Hildibrand, who was a master of wood engraving and a pupil of Best and Leloir, received an honourable mention at the Salon of 1872. He made his Salon début in 1866 with two engravings after Gustave Doré, produced as illustrations for Dante's Purgatorio, and continued to participate regularly in the exhibitions held
