Joséphine was the sister of the sculptor Frédéric Houssaye, and a pupil of Robert Fleury and Henner. She began exhibiting at the Salon in 1868 and became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1883, winning a third-class medal in 1892, then a silver medal in 1900 (at the Exposition
