John Hoyland attended Sheffield College of Art from 1951 to 1960, then the Royal Academy Schools in London. In 1957 he travelled in the South of France and on Italy's Adriatic coast. He then began teaching: at Croydon School of Art from 1962; at Chelsea School of Art
