After beginning his artistic education in Copenhagen, Jens Jerichau went to Rome where he became one of Thorvaldsen's best pupils. Upon his return to Copenhagen he rose to prominence as a proponent of the Danish School. He received several important commissions, including the Œrsted and Andersen monument in Copenhagen,
