Gajin studied traditional painting under Bairei (1844-1895) and Shunkyo Yamaoto (1871-1933) before settling in Tokyo in 1907, where he studied painting at the Hakubakai Institute and Taiheiyo Western Painting Institute. He started making woodblock prints in 1922 and exhibited regularly at the Creative Print Society. From about 1930, he worked solely in black ink on
