Kretschmer began his studies in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland) with Koska, then went to work in Kolbe's studio at the academy in Berlin. He produced many illustrations. His watercolours are considered to be particularly remarkable. He visited Egypt and Abyssinia (Ethiopia) with Duke Ernest of Saxe-Cobourg
