Kunisada I was a pupil of Toyokuni (1769-1825). He adopted the name Toyokuni III on becoming head of the Utagawa School around 1830. In addition to illustrating many books, he produced actor portraits and pictures of beautiful women, winning public favour and reflecting the usages, customs and atmosphere
