Adélaïde Labille-Guiard was a student of François-Élie Vincent, the miniaturist painter. By 1770, several pastel portraits had already gained her entry to the Académie St-Luc. On the advice of Maurice Quentin de Latour, she undertook more substantial works. In 1782, in support of membership in the
