John St Helier Lander studied animal painting under F.W. Calderon, and subsequently trained at the Royal Academy in London and Académie Julian in Paris, where he was a pupil of Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. He settled in London in 1898, and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute
