Jules Lefranc was born in Laval, the birthplace of Henri Rousseau 'le Douanier' and playwright of the absurd Alfred Jarry, where his parents had a hardware shop which he took over. The idea to start painting came to him when, around 1901, he saw Monet paint the sea.
