Rita Letendre studied at Montreal School of Fine Arts. In 1962 she travelled to France with a grant from the Canadian Arts Council. Between 1965 and 1970 she lived in Los Angeles where she studied engraving.

After finishing at the Fine Arts school, she worked in a slightly surrealist style, verging on an instinctive automatism, reckless and impassioned,
