Liu Haisu spent much of his life in Shanghai, where in about 1911 he first studied under Zhou Xiang. In 1918–1919 he went to Japan, and on his return in 1921 he lectured on Western art at Beijing University. From 1919 to 1927, he and his students organised an annual
