A student of Michel Drolling, Jean-Baptiste Guérin and Victor Biennourry, he first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1859, winning a third-class medal in 1880 and a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1889. He illustrated books, including Under the Empire (
