John McEwen started by being an amateur painter, but the discovery of the works of Borduas and his friendship with Riopelle drew him more deeply into painting. From 1947 to 1950 he worked in the studio of Borduas. From 1951 to 1953 he was in Paris, where he associated with American painters, notably Sam Francis, and he visited Italy, Holland
