Born 23 February 1856, in Virbalis; died 9 April 1917, in Petrograd (now St Petersburg).

Engraver, sculptor.

Vassili Mate studied at the school of design and later at the academy of art in St Petersburg. Between 1880 and 1883 he was awarded a scholarship which enabled him to travel to Paris to work with Pannemaker and Ferdinand Gaillard.
