Born 27 December 1724, in St-Avold (Moselle); died 23 December 1796, in Strasbourg.

Painter, engraver (burin).

The pupil of Van Loo and of Boucher, Melling established and headed a school of painting in Strasbourg. He was court painter in Karlsruhe, where he decorated the ceremonial hall in the castle. He also painted altarpieces for the church of St Stephen in Karlsruhe, and decorative
