At the age of 15, Leopoldo Méndez began studying drawing and painting at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura y Escultura La Esmeralda in Mexico City. He later became a pupil of Alfredo Ramos Martinez at the open-air school of Chimalistac. In 1932 he became director of the ministry of education in Mexico
