Merlier studied art at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, where he was influenced by Ossip Zadkine. Abstract in style, Merlier developed a Neo-Classical approach to his sculpture, combining a Neo-Cubist structure with an Expressionist purpose. In his recent work, influenced by Lorjou's populism, the allusion to popular arts has led him to produce grotesque figures
