Gustav Metzger fled Nazi Germany in 1939 and eventually settled in London, where he studied art (1942-1944). He transferred to the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp in 1948, completed his studies there in 1949 and returned to live in London in 1958.
