Little is known of Antoine Monsaldy, though he is a very interesting artist. He was admitted to the École de l'Académie Royale on 5 March 1787, through Cochin's sponsorship. He studied under Peyron and remained there until 1791. He went to Italy. According to Nagler, he was working in Rome at the beginning
