In 1898 Heinrich Nauen attended the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf and in 1899 studied at a private school in Munich. Between 1899 and 1902 he was a pupil of Leopold von Kalckreuth at the Königliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart.
