Samuil Nevelshtein studied at the Repin Institute in Leningrad where he was taught by Boris Mikhailovich Kustodiev and Igor Emmanuilovich Grabar. He later taught at the academy of fine arts in Leningrad. He was appointed a People's Artist and a member of the Union of Soviet Artists. He painted in the academic tradition
