Northen studied at the academy in Düsseldorf in 1847-1851. He made his reputation by painting scenes from the Napoleonic era. His Battle of Waterloo, exhibited in 1855, was a great success. He was also inspired by episodes from the Prussian-Danish and Franco-German wars. He frequently took part
