Émile Perrin studied under Baron Gros and Paul Delaroche. For Perrin, painting was only a secondary occupation, as he was also an art, drama and music critic. He was director of the Opéra-Comique in Paris from 1848 to 1857, of the Théâtre Lyrique in 1854,
