From 1957, Jean-Pierre Pophillat studied under Chapelain-Midy at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He took the Casa Velázquez award in 1964 and lived in Madrid until 1966.

His paintings of Mediterranean coastal sights brim with joie de vivre bolstered by vibrant colours and a sound planar structure. One of his favourite themes was
