Carlo Giuseppe Ratti started out as a pupil of his father Giovanni Ratti. He later went to work with Anton Raffael Mengs, with whom he formed a close friendship. Pope Pius VI made him a knight. He republished Soprani's Lives of Famous Painters, often altering the original text.
