Rau was a student of Dubois at the Académie Royale des Beaux Arts in Brussels. He was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1911. He travelled around Europe on several occasions. He was inspector of the teaching of decorative art and architecture, and a member of the Belgian Académie Royale des Beaux
