Ethel Reed studied under the miniaturist Laura Hill. At the age of 18 she began work as an illustrator and poster artist, and moved to Boston where she designed a large number of important book posters, illustrations, covers and flyleaves. She also published drawings in the magazines Punch and The Yellow Book
