Bill Reid's work offered a modern vision of Haïda culture, a native tribe from the West coast of Canada. His decorations on masts, canoes, pediments and trunks evoke traditional totem figures. Lévi-Strauss considered Reid to be one of the greatest sculptors of the 20th century.
