Nicholas Revett travelled to Italy in 1742 in order to study painting. He spent time in Rome as a pupil of Benefiol in Rome, and, during his stay there met and became firm friends with James 'Athenian' Stuart, who encouraged him to take a close interest in ancient public monuments
