José Sabogal visited Europe and North Africa, then studied at the art school in Buenos Aires. While in Mexico he met Orozco and Rivera, whose influence he felt. He taught at the Lima art school.

He was an expressionist painter who wanted to increase awareness and appreciation of Amerindian
