John Sheepshanks was an artist-philanthropist who painted watercolour landscapes and produced some interesting drawings. His principal claim to fame, however, is his magnificent bequest to the nation in the form of 233 oils and 409 drawings and watercolours, presented 'in order to facilitate and advance the study of painting'.
