Silanion is known chiefly for his portraits of famous people in the world of politics, philosophy and art; he also made statues of athletes and characters from tragedies. His portrait of Plato was to become the standard model for portraits of the philosophers. He attempted to reproduce the features of his subjects as expressively and realistically as possible.
