Thaeter studied at the academy in Dresden, and under Albrecht Reindel in Nuremberg and Sam Amsler in Munich. He was active in Nuremberg, Berlin, Weimar, Dresden and Munich. He engraved portraits, genre and history subjects, and notably collaborated on Count Raezynski's History of Art. He was a professor at
