Hermann Winterhalter was the brother of Franz Xaver Winterhalter. He studied in Munich and Rome, then set up in Paris, and finally in Karlsruhe. He exhibited at the Salon de Paris from 1838 to 1869, being awarded a third class medal in 1844.
