Yasui Sotaro was the son of a cotton wholesaler. He commenced his studies at the Kansai Bijutsu-in and continued with the landscape painter Asai Chu. In 1907 he went to Paris, where he was the pupil of Jean-Paul Laurens at the Académie Julian. In 1914 he returned to Japan. He was a member of the
