Betty Woodman attended the School for American Craftsmen at Alfred University in New York from 1948 to 1950. In 1980 and 1986 she was awarded fellowships from the National Endowment of the Arts. In 2000 she became an Honorary Fellow of the National Council of Educators in Ceramic Arts.
