Ian Carr-Harris studied Modern History at Queen’s University, where he received an honours bachelor of arts in 1963, and went on to obtain a bachelor of library science from the University of Toronto in 1964. He received an Associate of the Ontario College of Art diploma in Sculpture in 1971.
