The identification of art in Paris with a mythical version of the city is a commonplace of popular art history. This article examines the confusions and obstacles to looking at art occasioned by using that identification as an organising principle, with reference to exhibitions of twentieth-century Parisian art held at the Royal Academy in 2002 and in Paris in 2001 that were mounted in terms of differing understandings of the relation between the history and the work.
