Neither the old nor the new Universities in the UK have been renowned for working systematically with local community groups, in spite of recent rhetoric about ‘universities and their communities’.

This article, through selected case-studies over the past 15 years, outlines how a University Department of Adult Education has been an educational and research resource for such groups. These issues are examined in the context of recent policy changes in university continuing education.
