American sculptor and collector. At the age of 19 he entered the Art Institute of Chicago School, where he was inspired to become a sculptor after drawing from plaster casts of Michelangelo’s works. In 1883 he went to Paris to continue his studies under Pierre-Jules Cavelier (1814–94) at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
