American potter and designer. Born into an Ohio pottery family, he studied ceramics under Charles Fergus Binns at Alfred University, Alfred, NY. In 1913 he opened his first pottery in Cleveland, OH, and in 1917 received his earliest public recognition when awarded the first prize for pottery at the Art Institute of Chicago. After World War I, he chose Rocky River, a suburb of Cleveland, as the site for a pottery where he produced
