Term used in Classical architecture for the superstructure carried by columns and divided horizontally, top to bottom, into cornice, frieze and architrave. The proportions and details of the entablature, which are strictly prescribed, differ for each order (see Orders, architectural, §I, 1(ii), and fig. i; Greece, ancient, fig.k). By extension, the term is applied to any feature similar to a Classical entablature, used as the crown of a wall.
