German family of artists, of Danish descent. Johann Franz Joseph Genelli (1724–92) was a draughtsman and embroiderer in the service of Empress Maria-Theresa in Vienna until 1774, when he went to Prussia. Janus Genelli (1761–1813), a landscape painter, (1) Hans Christian Genelli and Friedrich Genelli (1765–93), an engraver, were sons of Johann Franz Joseph; (2) Bonaventura Genelli was Janus’s son.
