French architect. The son of a building contractor, from 1796 he studied under Claude Mathieu Delagardette (1762–1805) at the Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris. In 1801 he was appointed Inspecteur des Travaux Publics for the Seine district. His first work was the church (1805–18) of Boves, Picardy. It was the prototype for a series of churches, all inspired by Jean-François-Thérèse Chalgrin’s St-Philippe-du-Roule (1764–84), Paris, that were built by Godde and his imitators during the
