Site in northern Iraq on the east bank of the River Tigris, 3 km north of Assur. It was for a time the Middle Assyrian capital city, founded by Tukulti-Ninurta I (reg 1243–1207 BC) after his conquest of Babylon in his 11th year. It ceased to be the capital after its founder’s murder, but texts indicate that habitation continued throughout the Neo-Assyrian period (until 612 BC). The site was excavated by the
