Canadian painter and writer of American birth. He studied painting in Paris at the Académie Julian and at the Académie Henri Matisse from 1907 to 1910. He lived and painted in Europe until 1931, basing himself in Paris and only occasionally returning to Canada for short visits. Lyman never had to earn a living from his art as he was from a well-to-do family. This financial security allowed him to travel extensively in France, Spain
