Hungarian painter. Orphaned at an early age, he learnt carpentry but, even as an apprentice, was a keen draughtsman. He took regular lessons in Gyula from an itinerant painter, Elek Szamossy (1826–88). After going to Pest in 1863 he spent half a year at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna in 1864, where he befriended László Paál and János Jankó (1833–96), whose drawings later inspired several of his genre paintings.
