Capital of the ancient Macedonian kingdom in northern Greece, about 30 km north-west of Thessaloniki and astride the Via Egnatia. In antiquity the area was connected with the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean Sea, on which Thessaloniki lies. The Macedonian capital was transferred to Pella from Aigai by Archelaus (reg c. 413–c. 399 BC), who had at his court the painter Zeuxis, the poet Agathon and the dramatist Euripides, who died there
